Introduction

If we have taken a closer look into the written communication in the modern business environment, we would find that it requires a great mix of the capabilities that could look irrelevant from the very outset. But in reality, combining and employing them effectively is deemed mandatory for effective written communication. Such capabilities include intellectual skills, like, analysis, planning, organizing and attitudes, and professional values, like truthfulness, honesty, objectivity and attention to details, and behavioral skills, like, communication and understanding others, and linguistic skills, like, good command of the language of communication, possessing a rich command of vocabulary and the ability to express succinctly, and intermediary to advanced skills in the use of the IT applications. Besides, some important basic capabilities in the field of research and information gathering.

The capability of written communication is considered among the job prerequisites that by way or another are commonplace in almost all public and private organizations. As such, it was defined amongst the main array of capabilities targeted by the job rehabilitation program. The said program also targets all individuals whose work requires learning the skills of written communication, whether they were at the outset of their professional life or in their way to promotion, and their occupational skills need to be further developed.

This material is related to the courseware “Business Writing”, which focuses on developing the capability of the students to commence writing in a methodical manner within the context of the basic concepts of the human communication, and through understanding the general principles and rules of developing the documents in the field of business, and the rules relative to each of the main types of documents. And this material will take into account the fact that the other capabilities required for the effective written communication - mentioned above - are targeted by the other curricula. This write-up is comprised of eight chapters. The first chapter - the framework of written communication - aims to help the students realize the concept of the written communication from the perspective of the General Model of Human Communication, learn the basic instructions which use prevails all types of writing and their purposes in the field of business, and learn certain methodology for preparing the documentation - of different types - that would accustom the students to commence writing in an organized and professional manner.

However, the chapters from two to nine will highlight each of the common written communication methods by describing their relevant uses and instructions on developing them, and this would be conducted according to what the students have learned in chapter one of the General Methodology of Preparing the Documents for enhancing their understanding of such methodology and familiarizing them of using which. And this material includes illustrative examples and exercises that cement the student’s understanding of the concepts. Such exercises will be reinforced by the practical applications and workshops that are being carried out inside the class.

By the end of this book, the trainee will be able to use all types of the written communication channels. They would be able to write all types of letters, internal memos, and use the email as a means of swift and effective communication. The trainee will also be able to learn how to send telegraphs, fax, arrange the meetings, writing their minutes and agenda. In addition, they will be able to write the reports and their summaries, and the sales pitch of all kinds.
